Chat history lives only on the devices that received it, so a new device that turns chat on starts empty — there is no way to bring history over without an existing device agreeing to send it. The transfer always needs you to act on both devices yourself; there is no one-tap approval.
The steps
- On the new device, open Devices and choose to transfer history to this device. It shows a confirmation code (with a QR code you can scan instead) and how long that code stays valid.
- On an existing device where chat is already on and that has history to send, open Devices and you'll see a pending request naming the new device that is asking for your history. Only continue if you started this yourself, on the device you're holding — never read the code out to anyone, including qxbao.dev staff.
- On the existing device, type in the code exactly as it's shown on the new device. Each wrong entry shows how many tries you have left; after 3 wrong entries, the sync request is cancelled and you start again from the new device.
- Once the code matches, the new device confirms the request, and your history is then sent over — the whole thing stays end-to-end encrypted. Both devices show the transfer's progress.
- When it's done, the new device shows history received, and the existing device shows it was sent.
If something goes wrong
If the code is wrong, expired, or wasn't meant for you, the request is rejected and you need to start again. You can cancel the transfer at any point before it finishes, from either device.
